Basic FRP* Laminating Course Description

 

The NSBA offers a four week Basic FRP Laminating course that gives participants the basic knowledge and skills required to lay up simple fibreglass parts. Topics covered in the course relate to the fibreglass compulsory skills of the Nova Scotia Boat Builder Apprenticeship Program.

*FRP stands for Fibre Reinforced Plastic which is usually referred to as ‘Fibreglass’

Minimum number of course participants: 6
Prerequisites for course participants:

  • At least 18 years old
  • CPR / First Aid

Topics covered during the course:

  • Personal Safety
  • FRP Resins, Catalysts and Hardeners
  • Fabrics Used in FRP Boat Building
  • Core Materials
  • FRP Mould Preparation
  • Tools Used in FRP Boat Building
  • De-Moulding and Trimming

  • Practice tests

Benefits of taking the course:

  • If you successfully complete the Basic FRP Laminating Course and secure full time employment with a boatbuilder as an FRP Laminator, you can register in the NS Boat Builder Apprenticeship Program and receive Prior Learning and Assessment Recognition (PLAR) credits for the program’s FRP compulsory units
  • You will be highly employable by a boatbuilder once you successfully complete the Basic FRP Laminating Course
